What a wonderful start to a holiday, arrived at Worthing to fine weather, the sun was shining down on us. As an even better treat Worthing had the luxury of not only one Wetherspoon Pub but TWO - could life get any better!
The Chatsworth Hotel was extremely comfortable and spacious with most of the rooms overlooking the lush green square or the sea, those less fortunate who were located at the back overlooked a bus depot (guess where I was?) needless to say I didn't need an early morning alarm - whoever says there aren't enough buses should have slept in my room! Food took on a large part of the holiday with three course sumptuous breakfasts, which of course would have been rude to leave, breakfast was followed by trying to heave ourselves out of chairs to take on our arduous walks. Evening meals were a very sociable event, rather like playing musical chairs and seeing what table you landed on, but wherever you sat you were always sure of pleasant company and laughter. Now for the important bit, which I almost forgot - the walking.
There was a selection of three walks put on each day, the walking area on this coastline consists of wonderful rolling hills and as you ascend some slightly uphill paths you were rewarded with beautiful views over the countryside. We covered parts of the South Downs Way. In the sunshine we came across cows with their calves and sheep with their lambs (chops will never look the same again!) We were entertained with the sounds of birds singing together with a twitcher informing us of their identity. At lunchtime we stopped at idyllic pubs where among other choices we could partake of "the legless rambler" and that was just the beer! We visited Arundel where some of the ramblers extended the walk with a visit to the Castle.
Besides the usual shenanigans that you would expect such as rumours of miles on walks being doctored, people walking in to stranger's rooms (and that was just me!) it was an absolutely wonderful week. This wouldn't have happened without the assistance of Ron & Naomi working out the rotas, people offering lifts in their cars, leaders taking on the walks and, last but not least, the amount of work that Eileen and Ivan put into choosing, booking and arranging this venue and in Ivan's words "We just need good weather and we have cracked it."
